9 Love others well, and don’t hide behind a mask; love authentically. Despise evil; pursue what is good as if your life depends on it. 10 Live in true devotion to one another, loving each other as sisters and brothers. Be first to honor others by putting them first. 11 Do not slack in your faithfulness and hard work. Let your spirit be on fire, bubbling up and boiling over, as you serve the Lord. 12 Do not forget to rejoice, for hope is always just around the corner. Hold up through the hard times that are coming, and devote yourselves to prayer. 13 Share what you have with the saints, so they lack nothing; take every opportunity to open your life and home to others. (from Romans 12:9-13 in The Voice)
If I am honest, I often see things in Scripture as a standard for living. Some would say that is the right way to see Scripture. And there is just enough truth there to have made me believe it. And here is where the honesty comes in – I see it as MY new standard of living and I work very hard to keep the standard… to keep the new “rules.” But as I grow in my walk with Jesus, He has been teaching me that seeing Scripture that way is not Truth. Scripture is HIS standard for living and only HE can empower me to live like that. If I can do it on my own, it’s not the Gospel at work in me. It’s just me.
I know that I have been crucified with Christ and that I no longer live but see Christ living in me when I pause, look back on my day or week, and am “surprised by love” where supernatural love showed up where Hard Working Henry normally would have been. Then I know I am His and that He is at work in me, working out my salvation.
So take a moment at the end of this week and reflect and ask, “How much of my week did I live without the Lord Jesus Christ?” and “How much couldn’t I have lived without Him?”
Until next time… Follow the King!
